Kantar Retail’s Top 50 US and Global Retailers of 2017

Kantar Retail’s latest rankings of the top 50 US and global retailers show the top three retailers on the US list holding their own, while one of China’s largest eCommerce players made the biggest jump on the global list.

Rankings are estimates based on year-to-date 2017 results, primarily reported in September/October, and include five-year sales projections for each retailer.

Highlights among the top 50 US retailers include:

• Walmart, Kroger, and Amazon retained their positions as the top three US retailers.
• Target, Lowe’s, and Albertsons held their top-10 rankings from our most recent top 50 list, which was issued in July 2017.
• The combined Ahold Delhaize continues to linger just outside the top 10, in 11th place.
• Sears dropped two slots from 24th to 26th, while J.C. Penney moved up three slots to 31st.
• Good Neighbor Pharmacy, which debuted on our July list in 40th place, moved up to 38th on the current list.
• PetSmart retained its 46th-place ranking throughout 2017.
• At the bottom of the list, Couche-Tard moved up five slots to 45th place, AAEFS dropped from 47th to 50th, and Staples returned to the top 50, landing in 49th place following our forecast revision.

Highlights among the top 50 global retailers include:

• As they did on our July global top 50 list, Walmart, Amazon, and Costco held down the top three spots, keeping Schwarz Group (parent company of Lidl and Kaufland) just off the podium.
• The biggest climber on the new list is JD.com, which advanced four spots into the top 20 to land in 18th place.
• Auchan and Migros posted the biggest drops, each falling three places. Auchan fell from 13th to 16th place, while Migros dropped from 47th to 50th.
• Alibaba entered the ranking in 43rd place based on its direct sales estimates for the year.
• Ahold Delhaize moved up one spot to 13th.
• Aeon moved up two spots to 14th.
